Todd Olson receives a dedication from the Skis for his 20 years of service as a player and manager.

The Skis ended their season yesterday with a loss in the region tournament.  It also ended the career of Skis manager Todd Olson.  Todd has decided to retire after his twenty years of service for the Skis as both a player and manager.  Todd dedicated his summers to the Skis each year, never missing a game.   He's lead the Skis to successful seasons countless times including division titles, playoff titles, region titles and state tournament appearances.  Last Saturday before the games got under way a dedication ceremony was held in Sobieski honoring Todd with a framed #19 jersey, and having him throw out the first pitch.  Congratulations Todd on an excellent career and best of luck in the future.

Nathan Olson

Today the Skis attempt to qualify for the state tournament for the fourth time in the past eight years.  Standing in their way are the St. Stephen Steves who are looking to make a return trip to state in back-to-back years.  The Skis and Steves have had two hard fought close games already this season with the Steves coming out on top in each occurrence.  The Steves out lasted the Skis in a regular season game 8-7 in eleven innings on May 11th, and got the best of them again in the second round of the region tourney, 5-2.  It all gets underway in Sobieski at 1:00 pm with the winner facing the lossless Lakers of Lastrup at 4:00 for the region 8C championship banner.

It's that time of year again. The time that all amateur baseball fans in central Minnesota get treated to a weekend of baseball at its finest.  It may only be the prelude to the big show, but I liken it to the WCHA Final Five.  A tournament before the ultimate goal of all teams that equals, or in some cases, exceeds what it is to follow.

The Region 8C tournament is always one of the top tourney's in the state.  Often there are more than a couple top rated teams in the state populating the field and with only two spots to issue for State, the competition is always at another level.  This year proves no different.  Let's take a quick look at the field.

You've got to start with the Lakers of Lastrup.  Thirteen and zero entering the tournament makes it tough not to just assume they will walk away with it.  No one has gotten the best of them in regular season play to this point and no one has been close in the playoffs where the Lakers took three games by a total of 42-5 in twenty-three innings.  A tight 4-3 loss by the St. Mathis Devils was as close as anyone has come.  That was back in May.

There are other teams that posted impressive records in the regular season though.  St. Stephan took the South crown by going 11-2, Fort Ripley made it back-to-back division titles with a 10-3 record.  Avon finished second in the South with a 9-4 record and that's saying something in that division this year.  They beat an equally tough team in Opole (9-4) just to make it to this point.  The Skis hung another banner in the West with a 9-4 record and won their last eight games (eleven if you count three exhibition tournament wins).

Not to be left out are the Brainerd Braves, who posted a 9-4 record surprising most fans (they were ranked thirteenth in the pre-season poll) which included a sweep of the season series against the division winning Rebels.  Upsala (5-8) has won three of the last their last five in tough tourney games, have beaten the Skis once already, and gave Avon and St. Stephen all they could handle in 3-2 and 7-5 (10 innings) loses respectively.  Buckman, who finished seventh in the pre-season poll, has been on a roll after a tough start.  They have won five of the last eight.  All three losses were to Lastrup.

What does it all mean?  At this point it means little more than the players and fans of the Victory League are in for one heck of weekend of baseball.  Starting Saturday at 11:00 a.m. find a comfortable spot at Pierz Legion Park because there will be twenty four hours of top notch baseball on display over a thirty six hour period.  Momentum will slither like a snake, cheers and jeers will saturate the air, two teams will go undefeated, two team will be knocked out, and four others will survive to do it all again in the following weekend in Sobieski.

If you can't make it to the park you can always listen to the soothing voice of Rick Grammond on KLTF radio (960 AM), or if you are out of the central Minnesota area you can listen live on the internet courtesy of  FallsRadio.com.  All eight games will be broadcast on both outlets for your listening pleasure.

Good luck to all teams!

The Skis completed the weekend sweep of the Riverdogs this afternoon to move into the lead (by tie breaker) in the West division.
May 16th, 2008
The Skis have dropped to #7 in the latest Hardballer Top Ten.  Meanwhile their opponent this weekend is rated #5.  This weeks home and home series with the Riverdogs will go a long way in determining if the Skis will have a shot at the division title again this year.  A sweep puts them in a tie with the Riverdogs and right back into the thick of things.  Getting swept may not lock the door on the title hopes, but it'll definitely shut the door, and maybe put a couch behind it.  For an early season weekend, it doesn't get much bigger than this.  Be sure to attend the games!

It was a clean sweep for Jon Czech in this weeks Ski MVP voting.  See the number total and read the comments here.
May 12th, 2008

A few interesting facts about the poll.
- Buckman was the highest rated team without a first place vote.
- Avon was the only team in the top five without double digits in first place votes.
- Buckman and Pierz Bulldogs were the only two teams to have neither a first or last place vote.
- Brainerd was the lowest rated team with a first place vote.
