Region 8C Preview
This weekend marks one of the best summer traditions in
central Minnesota. For me it's the best tournament
in the Minnesota, but maybe I'm biased since my team
plays in it. Of course I'm talking about the
Region 8C Amateur baseball tournament. Three
weekends. Eight teams. Two advance.
One wins.
The first weekend can be a marathon, for the players,
and more so the fans (and radio broadcaster).
Eight games in less than 48 hours. It's baseball,
baseball, baseball, followed by more baseball with a
short break while the sun shines on the other side of
the world. It all gets underway on Saturday at
11:00 am.
This years field
matches last years field, but the results are anything
but predictable. The top half of the bracket is
going to be a tough experience for one of the teams this
year. That's because the bracket features the four
regular season division winners whom have combined for a
total of four losses in the regular season...and one of
them won't make it to the second weekend. Tough
times indeed. Lastrup boasts and undefeated record
for the second year in a row, Fort Ripley won a very
competitive North division, Sobieski has but one blemish
on the record, and Avon only dropped one in the regular
season.
Don't get me wrong, the bottom half of the bracket is
nothing to sneeze at. Brainerd has won four
straight including two over north division winner Fort
Ripley. Buckman has been tough all season and lost
in extra innings to Lastrup in the East playoff
final. St. Stephen is the reigning Region 8C
champion and South playoff winner. Upsala knocked
off a Randall team who had only lost three regular
season games and handed Sobieski it's only loss on the
year.
Whatever the result, it's sure to be high quality
baseball in Pierz this weekend and in Avon when the
tourney shifts South for the final two weekends.
There will be amazing pitching performances, clutch
hits, a few nails bitten, a few beverages emptied,
cheers, jeers, great plays, a few errors, and the
natural highs and lows of competition at high stakes.
Do what you have to do, but if you can make it to the
tourney over the next three weekends be sure to be there
and cheer for your favorite team. If you can't
make it to the games be sure to follow the action on
KLTF radio (960 AM), or on the internet at fallsradio.com.
